Residential Interior Design

Homes designed around the way people actually live.

Curzey approaches residential interiors through lifestyle, space planning, storage, lighting, materials, joinery and delivery decisions that support long-term comfort rather than short-lived styling.

01 · Lifestyle brief

A residential brief should describe routines, priorities and possessions—not just a preferred style.

How a household cooks, entertains, works, rests, stores belongings and uses outdoor space has more impact on the success of a home than a mood-board label. The design brief should capture those routines alongside privacy, accessibility, family change and maintenance expectations.

That information gives the space plan, joinery, lighting and furniture a practical foundation before the aesthetic language is developed.

02 · Planning + storage

Good homes reduce daily friction through clear planning and deliberate storage.

Circulation, furniture clearances, kitchen workflow, wardrobe capacity, utility spaces, home-office needs and family storage should be resolved early. Custom joinery is most useful when it answers a real storage or functional need rather than simply filling walls.

The same discipline applies to lighting: ambient, task and accent layers should support different activities and times of day rather than relying on one uniform lighting scheme.

03 · Materials + budget

The material palette should balance atmosphere, durability, maintenance and available investment.

Residential budgets are often affected by joinery, kitchens, wardrobes, sanitaryware, decorative lighting, appliances, loose furniture and window treatments as much as by floor and wall finishes. A complete budget view helps prevent the visible rooms from consuming the investment before essential support spaces are resolved.

Material decisions should also consider replacement, cleaning, pets, children, sunlight, humidity and the client's willingness to maintain specialist surfaces over time.

04 · Nairobi + Coast

The same residential language should not be copied unchanged between Nairobi and the Coast.

Nairobi homes may prioritise thermal comfort, urban privacy, apartment or gated-community constraints and access to a broad supplier base. Coastal villas add salt, humidity, strong sun, ventilation, indoor-outdoor transitions and different maintenance realities.

The design should respond to place while still feeling like the client's home. That is particularly important for holiday homes, where remote ownership and long periods between visits change security, maintenance and material priorities.

Published proof is intentionally conservative. Dedicated case studies are separated from wider project references so the website does not imply a level of public documentation that is not currently available.

Frequently asked questions

Useful answers before you start.

What is included in residential interior design?

Depending on scope, residential interior design can include briefing, space planning, kitchens and wardrobes, material and finish specification, lighting, custom joinery, furniture selection, technical drawings, procurement support and site review.

Can Curzey design homes in both Nairobi and Kilifi?

Yes. Curzey serves residential projects in Nairobi and has a growing coastal focus anchored in Kilifi. The design response is adapted to local climate, maintenance, procurement and site conditions rather than applying one standard specification everywhere.

When should a residential interior designer be appointed?

Ideally before internal layouts, electrical points, lighting, plumbing positions and built-in joinery are fixed. Earlier involvement gives the design team more opportunity to coordinate the architecture and services around how the home will actually be used.
