Coastal interiors need more than a coastal-looking moodboard.

Coastal projects require a different material and maintenance conversation from many inland interiors. High humidity, salt-laden air, intense sun, wind-driven rain, sand and frequent indoor-outdoor movement can shorten the life of unsuitable finishes, hardware and equipment.

The design should therefore consider corrosion resistance, moisture behaviour, ventilation, mould risk, UV exposure, cleaning, pest resistance and maintenance access at the same time as comfort and aesthetics.

A coastal home often needs to work differently from a city apartment. Outdoor living carries more weight, guest accommodation may fluctuate, maintenance teams need practical access and owners may spend periods away from the property.

Good planning considers arrival, entertaining, shaded outdoor areas, wet transitions, storage, staff or service functions, security, ventilation and furniture that can tolerate the climate without making the home feel institutional.

Hospitality design at the Coast has to balance the guest experience with housekeeping, maintenance, operations, procurement and replacement cycles. A photogenic finish that deteriorates quickly or cannot be sourced again is a poor long-term design decision.

Curzey's approach connects guest journey, room and public-area planning, FF&E, lighting, material durability, back-of-house requirements and phased delivery so that the design can survive real operation after opening day.

Many specialist products, joinery components and furniture packages may originate in Nairobi or from regional suppliers. The project programme therefore needs realistic lead times for manufacture, consolidation, transport, secure storage, off-loading and replacement of damaged goods.

Where the client or design team is not permanently based at the site, reporting, inspections, mock-ups, approvals and photographic records should be planned deliberately rather than handled informally after work starts.
